Brothers in Arms is very much a family concern. As the owners, Guy & Liz Adams are involved in all aspects of the business on a daily basis. It’s not surprising really as  they live on the vineyard only 2 minutes down the road to the winery.

Langhorne Creek is Located less than an hour drive from Adelaide on South Australia’s Fleurieu Peninsula, Langhorne Creek is a picturesque, ancient gum studded region with an expanse of vineyards and farming and an intimate country town.  You can discover our region and home in the comfort of your own home through the enjoyment of our wines.

At Brothers in Arms we put our heart into full-bodied wine that is true to the estate and  true to the region. Our wines showcase our quality fruit and reflect the spirit of our family tradition. Since being established in 1998 we have achieved national & international recognition for our Brothers in Arms bottled beauties.

Introducing Killibinbin range from Brother In Arms

WHAT DOES KILLIBINBIN MEAN ?

 - Killibinbin is a local Aboriginal word meaning to “shine and be bright”.  We liked the idea of our wines being a shining example of what our vineyards, winery and also the Langhorne Creek region could produce.

WHERE DID THE INSPIRATION FOR THE LABELS AND NAMES COME FROM ?

 - To make a long story short, the original Killibinbin labels were rather bland. Just a simple red “K” on a parchment background.  Back in 2004 our US Importer at the time quite bluntly told us that the wines were killers but the labels were awful.  So we took that “killer” idea on board and briefed a design company in Adelaide called Mash to come up with some “killer” labels.  This series of Hitchcock inspired art nouveau are all referred to rather affectonately as our “girls” and they are all “killer” and no “filler”!!  When we released the 2004 Vintage under these labels we were probably one of the first in Australia to take this more left of centre branding pathway.

TELL US ABOUT THE WINES ?

When we are blending our wines the thing we always have front of mind is the mantra “balance, texture, structure”. We make consumer driven wines so we focus on them being approachable and well suited to enjoying with food.  The Killibinbin wines are meant to make a statement, each of the 3 wines offer something different to the consumer.  The value end Sneaky Shiraz, Seduction Cabernet and Secrets Cab/Shiraz/Malbec blend are what we call Wednesday wines.   They are juicy, approachable and easy to drink just right for a glass or two mid-week.  These 3 wines rely on fruit tannins for their structure rather than oak which we think makes them perfect for consumers who may be new to dry reds as they are round and not too drying on the palate.

WHAT STYLE OF WINES DOES THE LANGHORNE CREEK REGION PRODUCE ?

 -  The Langhorne Creek region is the largest premium cool climate region in Australia although it is relatively unknown. We have mild cool Winters, wet Springs and dry Summers.  It is actually a very Mediterranean climate but we also enjoy a strong, southerly maritime influence from the nearby Lake Alexandrina.  This brings an afternoon breeze in the Summer giving us a significant shift in diurnal temperature.  These cooler evenings give the vines a rest from the heat of the day and therefore we enjoy a long, more gentle ripening curve. As a result our wines tend to have deep colour, well developed secondary fruit flavours and ripe, round, plush tannin structures.  Shiraz and Cabernet Sauvignon were the first varieties planted in the region, with our original plantings now aged 126 years old.  We also grow Malbec and Chardonnay in our vineyards.  If you have ever drunk a big company South Eastern Australia wine, it would most likely have had a backbone of Langhorne Creek fruit. We actually refer to ourselves as the middle palate of Australian wine.

YOUR WINES SEEM TO HAVE A LITTLE BIT OF AGE ON THEM VERUS OTHER AUSSIE REDS WE SEE IN THE UK AT THE MOMENT, WHY IS THAT ?

 - Sales into bars and restaurants has always been an important part of our business and we believe that wines compliment food better when they have had some time to age and soften.

HOW MANY BOTTLES OF KILLIBINBIN ARE YOU PRODUCING A YEAR?

- Across all markets we are supplying around 90,000 bottles annually and growing quite steadily.

TELL US A FUNNY STORY ABOUT KILLIBINBIN....

- We got a call a few months back from a girl in her twenties in Korea who loved the wines and the labels and asked if she could come and visit us when she was in Australia.  We arranged to meet up during her visit, she rocked up at the winery, rolled up her shirt sleeve and revealed a tattoo of the Seduction Cabernet label on her arm!  We couldn’t believe that someone loved our work so much and that we had a super-fan!
